about

This is a collection of some of my earliest tracks from a period of time between January and September 1993. It also includes, afaik, the second piece of computer music I've ever created, called "From the Dark" (from February 1993).

The tracks are mostly very rough approximations of something, and while this could be an interesting (if also awkward) musical curiosity for some, don't expect anything stellar, despite of the title (in many places, even the musicality of the tracks in general can be questioned)! That said, I might still create new versions of certain pieces included (especially "Venus", "Jupiter" and "The Realms of Wind", of which the latter is one of my own all-time favourite pieces and is implemented in a very limited way on this album).

--

All of the tracks are based on 4-channel tracker modules and miscellaneous 8-bit (or in practice even lower resolution) samples from multiple different sources. The music has mainly been created using only the mono "beeper" of the PC as an audio output. So in a sense, a very limited single loudspeaker output would be the perfect match for this music, and the current stereo setup was not intentional for most of the tracks.

In contrast to more typical four-channel modules, this music was not really designed to be workable using four audio channels, but instead some ideas that didn't really suit the format that well were being crammed into it. I was, to a certain extent, trying to create something along the lines of Ed Starink's album "Inner Spirits" (one of my main sources of inspiration at the time). And technically I had just started learning working with trackers, so naturally the results fell very short.

But on the other hand the music was also partly inspired by the various samples themselves, which created some interesting sounds, effects etc.

The album is named according to my plan for creating a piece for each of the planets in our solar system, including certain moons as well. And yes, you can find all the planets here (somewhat bafflingly excluding our own and including Pluto, which was later on moved to the dwarf planet category). I never actually created the track for Mars' moon Deimos, despite the fact that Phobos already has its own and that I already planned doing both.

The versions of the tracks included here were recorded on a C-cassette directly from the audio output of a PC sound card probably in 1996 (with the accompanying buzz included) and re-digitized later in 2015 using an audio interface and Audacity.

The album art is a scan of the actual C-cassette used, and the release date used is the day the last one of the tracks was completed (not the recording date in 1996 or so, nor the actual release date to the general public, which was November 21st, 2017).

Samples: As I am currently unable to link many of the samples used here to their original copyright owners, and much of the tracking information has been lost, please contact me if you know where they're originally coming from, as I'd like to make sure that no-one gets upset because of his/her samples being used without explicit permission.
